UK Banks

Led the team investigating the Banks systems and processes concerned with the conversion of their credit cards from magnetic stripe to EMV smart card based. Produced the business and financial cases to support the conversion.

Developed a strategy to use smart card payment methods with Digital Television using set top boxes as the interface between the TV Company and the Banks payment systems.

Investigated the Banks systems and processes, technical and business, concerned with their entry into the UK EMV smart card project. Provided in depth technical EMV expertise to the development teams analyzing their in-house and package solutions.

Smart Card Migration Management

Led the team in the development and successful launch of the world's first EMV based debit / credit smartcard as part of the UK APACS CAM project. Launched the Visa Cash project as part of the UK Visa Cash pilot. Represented a major UK Bank on the Visa European Secure Electronic Commerce project acting as a consultant in the development of Visa International's Payment Gateway. 

Caribbean Banks

Advising, Planning, and Implementing the migrations of banks to EMV payment systems.

Middle East

Set up and used the processes needed to certify all of the terminals, ATM and POS, used in 17 countries for the Middle Eastern region of a major card scheme. Developed the key management processes to support offline PIN checking, on-line PIN checking, CVV / CVC checking, ARQC checking and ARPC creation.

Managed the installation of an in-house card production unit to produce EMV based chip cards with loyalty and security applications. Defined and set up the key management processes to support, PIN, CVV and ARQC/ARPC.

Defined the requirements for a Middle Eastern card scheme to provide their customers, cardholders and merchants and improved experience in online dealings with the company, including the systems required to back this. Produced the RFP to support this process.   

Major Credit Card Companies

Investigated all Card Issuer systems and business processes world-wide to determine the cost, feasibility, resource requirements and scope for update to full EMV standards for their charge and credit cards. Built the business case to support this major change to Company's systems. At the same time looked at the potential of moving the Rewards program to a chip or back office based system. 

Developed processes and procedures to co-ordinate the introduction of EMV chip based applications throughout all of the Company's regions.

The introduction of a new online internet based fee collection system designed to work with over 400 hundred banks spread across Central Europe, Middle East and Africa

The set up of new regionally based offices for the scheme to provide local region based administration.

Developed strategic acquiring plans into a viable launch plan for the establishment of future business policies. Carried out market research and analysis, requirements development, partnership selection and business case completion.

Defined the problems and developed processes and procedures in a number of chip related areas.  Including Chip Interoperability problem resolution, Fallback procedures to identify the problems causing fallback situations and Terminal / chip interaction in Pre-paid debit cards.

UK Processor

Provide full support for the set up of a new third party processor, offering ATM, POS and Internet Acquiring with full card and merchant acquiring.

Launched in 2008 the system involved installation of the software systems and the set up if full support facilities for the processor.

Greek Processor

Prepared the processor for full audit with Visa and MasterCard for personalization including covering the PCI Data Security standards for physical and logical systems now incorporated into these audits.

Ukrainian Bank

Developed the EMV migration plan for a Ukrainian Issuer and Acquirer to allow the migration of existing, ATM acquiring and issuing systems and accounts to full EMV compliance.  

Provided fraud training and on going support with business and technical questions during the migration.

Pan African Bank

Developed an EMV migration plan for a pan-African bank in 13 African countries. The plan is to allow compliance in each market to EMV and 3DES for ATM Acquiring and Issuing. Researched the online requirements needed to inform their customers in each market.

Bosnian Bank

Provided EMV and fraud training and EMV migration planning to a Bosnian Bank to support and facilitate their migration to EMV Acquiring and Issuing.

Romanian Bank

Developed the card issuing and acquiring business launch plans for credit and debit cards for a Romanian State Bank. This was to allow the bank to be successfully privatized. Worked with the World Bank to ensure that all of the required systems, online services, third party services, interfaces, and internal systems such as Fraud systems, General Ledger and products were defined correctly and in place. Developed loyalty programs, mainly aimed at the younger market that would differentiate the cards to be issued with the World Bank personnel. 

Dutch Bank

Defined all of the projects associated in the migration to EMV, covering all business and technical areas involved with credit and debit card issuing, ATM acquiring and fraud detection. Advised on the use of loyalty based programs that could be used alongside the EMV applications on the chip.

Major Irish Bank

Developed Acquirer and EMV migration plans, business cases, covering costing, resource requirements, systems upgrades and phasing for the bank. 

UK Card Issuers

Developed plans for a decoupled debit card linked to payments, retail, loyalty and charity based schemes to utilize the potential of the chip based technology.

Mobile Phone Providers

Developed strategies utilizing the combined use of mobile and payment technology on one platform.

Swiss Processor

Provided training and technical consultancy on various aspects of the EMV program. Supported the processor in the move to Visa credit card processing in addition to existing MasterCard credit card facilities.

Major UK Loyalty Provider

Carried out a study to determine the benefits of moving Air Miles loyalty systems from a back office AS400 server system to a card based application where the points accumulated would be stored on the card, spent from the card at the point of sale and also mirrored back to a central database. Defined the development of the terminal applications needed to support the card based loyalty application.

Major Systems Integrators

Develop strategic and operational plans for two major systems integrators in their efforts to support Visa International. One in the rollout of Visa Smart (EMV debit and credit) and the second in the implementation Visa Cash (electronic purse) on a worldwide basis.

Russian Banks

Produced and then managed the card roll out strategy for a major Russian Bank. This included review of EFT packages and the selection of software, pilot projects, fraud prevention, development of their own card offering, which included an account based loyalty scheme in petrol stations and the migration to EMV smart card based debit and credit products and ATM and POS terminals. The project is ongoing providing co-ordination between the business and technical aspects of the project.

Advised a St Petersburg bank on the best open platform solutions available to them to undertake acquiring in Russia. Launched successfully in 1997. 

Carried out strategic feasibility studies into the suitability of smart cards and magnetic stripe cards for various Russian Banks. As a typical example with one Bank defined all of the areas the Bank needed to consider before embarking on the implementation of an electronic purse system. Prepared the implementation for the banks preferred electronic purse project. Researched the availability of smart card support systems for a major integration provider. Project installed in the worlds largest steel works and is still in operation.

Global Travel Company

Developed the strategy for the launch of electronic purse, electronic commerce and other Internet based functions for a major global travel company. The strategy looked at ways of using smart card technology to promote loyalty and add value to business and holiday travelers. The strategy advised on the use of smart cards in multiple application areas including payments, loyalty, and access to holiday venues and transport. 

Private Label Card Launch

Development of the business and marketing plan for a niche market credit card for launch initially in the UK. The marketing plan defined those areas of the market to be targeted and proposes various ways in which the cardholder base could be built over the next two years. The card supported loyalty applications to enhance the build of the cardholder base.

US Acquirer

Supported a major US Acquirer in researching the UK and European markets to determine the best strategy for launching acquirer services in the UK. Contacted major retailers and set up seminars to introduce the US acquirer to the UK market.

Omani Bank

Produced card strategy, business case and cost justification for the launch of credit cards for an Omani Bank. This included fraud prevention, the targeting of general and niche markets. Reviewed and identified the correct software needed to support this launch strategy.

Third Party Processing

Prepared the launch of a third party processing service for petrol cards. Included Business strategy, business plan production, cost benefit analysis and all of the business requirements for the launch.

Bank Card Software

Defined the business requirements for a new client server card management system for a major oil company. The requirement covered all areas of card services for fleet and credit cards. Produced the Business and Functional Specifications for the above system.
